    About this item

    Arthur Willett (British 1857-1918). Based in Brighton, he exhibited at shows and galleries around the UK. Examples included Dundee 1886,  Brighton 1883, 1885, 1886, 1901, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour 1887, Royal Scottish Academy 1890, Belfast 1901, Exeter 1901, Sheffield Artist's Exhibition 1902, Cheltenham & County Fine Art Society 1904, Liverpool 1906, Cardiff 1915. 
    Watercolour painting of a beautifully detailed riverside scene, with figures strolling past farm buildings and grazing sheep.
    Signed lower right. This is likely to be a Sussex location.
    Framed and glazed in more recent years. Image within mount aperture 14cm x 29.5cm, glazed frame 35 x 49 cm.
    There is some reflection in the glazing on the photographs, apologies. We resist opening frames unless absolutely necessary.

    Biography researched and compiled by MastheadArt:
    Born Ewhurst, East Sussex in 1857. Son of Henry Willett, Carver and Gilder. In 1871 he is shown with family in Portslade, Sussex, aged 14 and already working as a gilder. In 1881 he was living with his uncle, George Willett, at Broad water in Sussex, working as an artist while George was a Picture Dealer. He married Maria Mitchell in 1882 in Brighton, he is shown as an Artist of Queens Road Brighton on the certificate. In 1891 Arthur is at Princes Cresent Brighton, artist in watercolours, with wife Maria and five children.
    The 1901 census sees Arthur, 44, living in Grove Street Brighton with wife Maria and five children aged 8-18, he is working as an artist.  In the 1911 census Arthur is shown as a Painter in Watercolour aged 54, still living at Grove Street Brighton with with his wife and four children. 
    Arthur died 2nd August 1918 and is buried in Brighton and Preston Cemetery. His probate record shows he was still at Grove Street when he died, his estate left to his widow Maria, who died in 1928.
