Theodore Hines / John Theodore Hynes (British 1859-1922). Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880 until 1889, Society of British Artists 1882. Brother of artist Frederick Hines. Born Hynes the surname Hines was adopted in the 1860s and 1870s before Theodore reverted to the use of Hynes around 1882 when he married (Frederick continued to use the Hines spelling certainly into the time of the 1911 census - his marriage record in 1881 shows him a "Frederick Hynes otherwise Fred Hines").

This is a 19th century watercolour painting of a woman and child gathering wood on a rural riverbank. The figures are beautifully painted. Signed lower right.
Framed and glazed in more recent years. Image within mount aperture 26.5 x 36.5 cm, glazed frame (shipping notes re glazing are below) 45 x 55 cm.

Born in London as John Theodore Hynes at the end of 1859, where he grew up with his artist brother Frederick and other siblings, remaining in London throughout his life. His father, John's, surname was spelt Hynes on his own marriage registration in 1851 but the surname was spelt as Hines in the 1861 and 1871 census for the whole family.
The 1881 census sees him named as Theodore Hines, artist aged 21 lodging in St Pancras in London. His marriage to Agnes Bowditch the following year, 1882 in Marylebone, names him on the marriage registration as John Theodore Hynes.
The 1911 census shows him as John Theodore Hynes, 51, with his wife Agnes in Titchfield Street, Marylebone, London, "Manager to a firm of wholesale fine art dealers". His electoral register records show him as John Theodore Hynes too. Probate records show he died 7th Dec 1922 as John Theodore Hynes and was living at Powis Square, Notting Hill, leaving his estate to his widow Agnes
